Once Human's Pollution Zones Get a Chaotic Overhaul: What to Expect in 2026
Once Human's Pollution Zones update brings random dangers, rich rewards, corrosion, and revamped Sanity mechanics.
When survival becomes predictable, challenges lose their meaning. That's the philosophy driving Once Human's latest update, which promises to turn the Pollution Zone into a chaotic playground of high risk and high reward. On January 21 (PT), the developers are rolling out a comprehensive overhaul that will make every scenario journey feel like a fresh nightmare—in a good way, of course. So Metas should brace themselves: the days of snoozing through toxic clouds are over.
New Pollution Zones: Random, Ruthless, and Ready to Ruin Everyone's Day
After the update, scenario servers (excluding RaidZone Mode) will randomly generate Pollution Zones across different level areas. Each server gets unique locations and quantities, so no two worlds are the same. Some scenarios like 'Endless Dream,' 'Prismverse's Clash,' and 'Deviation: Survive, Capture, Preserve' will feature fewer zones to keep their core experience balanced. New servers will have fixed positions and types once generated, so players cannot just re-roll their way out of trouble.

The Rules Have Changed: Pollution Value, Corrosion, and Sanity
Gone are the days when Pollution value fluctuated with resource quantities. Now it's stable, but that's not necessarily good news. Higher Pollution means more special resources and a greater chance of gold/silver ore. Metas can use Stardust Miners to extract them—though they should not forget protective gear.
Structures in Pollution Zones will continuously suffer Corrosion until destroyed. Players can protect them by consuming specific materials, but the cost and speed scale with Pollution value. So if anyone thought their base was safe, they should think again.
If a Meta's resistance is lower than the Pollution value, Sanity loss slows significantly compared to the current version. However, items, Deviations, and other Sanity recovery methods become less effective. It's a trade-off: they lose their mind slower, but they also cannot fix it as easily.
And the Fools? They no longer spawn by default in low Sanity states. They only appear in [Wild Deviant] Pollution Zones. Their mechanics have been revised: new Fools won't instantly kill players, and they won't stop moving when observed. They're still creepy, but at least they're not insta-death anymore.
Items, Gear, and the Misty Past
The effects of [Stardust Malt Ale] and [Stardust Corn Ale] have been adjusted to boost Pollution Resistance, while [Signature Ice Brew] now enhances Sprint Speed. Because nothing says 'food-themed naming' like chugging ale to survive toxic fumes.
Gear degradation is now more severe upon death in a polluted zone, so maybe players should avoid dying there. Also, the Mist feature has been removed. The devs found that it failed to deliver fun and playability, with low participation rates. So they're temporarily removing it. Deviations and items from Mist can now be acquired by defeating Elites in Pollution Zones. The Mist will return in a better form someday, but for now, it's gone like a bad dream.
Survival Stats and Whims: More Chaos, More Fun
Survival Stats have been adjusted: Energy primarily affects HP, Hydration mainly affects movement, and weight influences temperature resistance. Characters now recover Sanity much faster while sleeping, and Heatstroke/Hypothermia progression is slower. So they can nap their way to mental health.
Whims have changed too. They now trigger when characters perform specific actions under low Sanity. Their effects have more distinctive visuals and entertaining impacts. For example, after triggering a certain Whim, defeating enemies while having low Energy may cause them to drop meat instead of regular loot. Because why not? More intriguing Whims await discovery.
Meet the New Pollution Zone Types
Each Pollution Zone has a mandatory Deviant Effect and 1-3 Deviant Traits, with more Traits as Pollution value increases. Upon entering, players will see the type and effects at the top of the screen (red pins for Deviant effects, yellow pins for Deviant Traits). They can click to view details.
Wild Deviant Pollution Zone

Deviant Effect: Damage falls off with distance from the target, while the mutation rate of wild plants increases.
Deviant Trait 1: When planted in Wild regions, crops have an increased chance of mutation.
Deviant Trait 2: Special trees appear in Wild regions. They are guaranteed to drop seeds/mutated plants when chopped down. If left unchopped for a certain time, these trees transform into Fools. These Fools no longer attack Metas but will devour crops planted by Metas. So they're basically garden pests with a horror twist.
Deviant Trait 3: When breeding in Wild regions, offspring have a chance to upgrade their Trait entries and an increased chance of obtaining rare patterns. Tamed animals lose Tameness more easily, and higher Pollution value accelerates this loss. So pets might start hating their owners.
Mirror Pollution Zone

Deviant Effect: In Mirror regions, damage falls off with how frontal the hit is. Looting or gathering actions have a chance to yield double rewards.
Deviant Trait 1: Interactive magic mirrors spawn in Mirror regions. Interacting with them summons a clone that follows the player, sharing damage taken. After the player attacks an enemy, the clone enters combat and Taunts the foe. Finally, a friend who takes hits for them!
Deviant Trait 2: Morphic Crates with reflective mirrors on their backs spawn in Mirror regions. Defeating them grants rich rewards. Metas must use their wits to overcome them! Good luck with that.
Deviant Trait 3: Backstab kills have a chance to double loot drops. So sneaky players, rejoice.
Void/Solid Pollution Zone

Deviant Effect: All creatures (including Metas, enemies, and animals) alternate between Void and Solid states. Void reduces Physical DMG, while Solid reduces Elemental and Psi DMG.
Deviant Trait 1: More enemies spawn. Because why not add more chaos?
Deviant Trait 2: If a Meta Captures an animal while it is in the Void state, the animal gains the Trait: Phantom. Animals with this trait take on a Void appearance, and their attacks deal random Elemental DMG. So players can have a ghost pet.
Deviant Trait 3: Elite enemy Frostella appears. Frostella will use different types of attacks based on the Metas' Void/Solid state. She's not here to play games—well, actually, she is, but a deadly one.
Final Thoughts
That's all for this Dev Blog. After the optimization and iteration of the Pollution Zone, the new Visional gameplay will also launch alongside it. The new S3 Visional Wheel gameplay will be revealed later. Stay tuned! If players have any suggestions or feedback, they can share them through the official feedback platform, customer service channels, or the official community. The Once Human Development Team is all ears—probably while hiding from Fools.
Now, Metas can go forth and get polluted. It's going to be a wild ride.
